MOOD FOOD of the Week: Broccoli Sprouts
MOOD FOOD of the Week: Broccoli Sprouts
Mood: Depression
Food: Broccoli Sprouts
Research has shown that broccoli sprouts can help calm the mind because…
They have a whopping 60% of your daily value of Vitamin C in just 3 oz! Vitamin C is a nutrient with antioxidant properties that reduce damage in the brain that can lead to low mood
Broccoli sprouts are rich in sulforaphane, a sulfur-rich compound found in cruciferous vegetables that nurtures the microbiome for reduced neuroinflammation and improved mood
They are also an excellent source of folate, a vitamin that helps to regulate neurotransmitter function whose deficiency has been linked to depression
How to add this MOOD FOOD to your diet:
Broccoli sprouts are neutral tasting sprouted broccoli seeds that are typically just 3-5 days old. While they are not often the bulk of any meal and tend to be consumed in just small quantities (that's all you need to reap the nutrient benefit!), they are a wonderful addition to almost any of your favorite brain food dishes! I love adding them to a colorful leafy green salad, incorporating them into roasted veggies, using them as a garnish for veggie soups and stews or adding them to a simple avocado toast. You can also include them in your favorite morning green smoothie recipes or scramble them into eggs to start the day. Some people may even enjoy eating a fork full just as they are with a bit of lemon or lime juice for a quick pick-me-up!
How to buy broccoli sprouts:
Broccoli sprouts can be found in the produce section of grocery stores or markets. They are typically only available fresh in the refrigerated section and come in small packages, usually near the herbs. Depending on where you live, you may also be able to find them at your local farmers market or in health and wellness or supplement stores. It is important to purchase organic broccoli sprouts whenever possible because they have been shown to be higher in contaminants that may be detrimental to mental fitness. However, cooking your sprouts makes them safe to enjoy freely!
Wishing you a joyful & calm week,
