MOOD FOOD of the Week: Eggs

Mood: Depression

Food: Eggs

Research has shown that eggs can help calm the mind because…

  • They are an excellent source of vitamin D, a neurosteroid that can travel from the blood to the brain cells to decrease inflammation associated with low mood

  • Eggs are naturally rich in choline, a nutrient that supports healthy brain cell development and nervous system regulation

  • They also are a great source of vitamin B6 which helps to increase levels of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin for elevated moods

How to add this MOOD FOOD to your diet:

If you choose to eat eggs, they are a highly nutritious food that can be enjoyed at any meal! Most commonly associated with breakfast, eggs can be enjoyed poached, scrambled with colorful veggies, as an omelet and over easy. A great way to use eggs is to meal prep mini frittatas. You can also hard boil them to add to a leafy green salad or to top avocado toast. I always suggest adding in spices and extra veggies to any egg meal for the added brain benefits.

This week, as part of my premium subscription, I am sharing my recipe for On-the-go Scrambled Eggs!

How to buy eggs:

Eggs can be found in most grocery stores, farmers markets, and local food shares. I recommend purchasing pasture raised and organic eggs because these tend to have significantly more nutrients and healthy fats than traditionally farmed eggs, but whichever version is accessible to you will still pack a mood boosting punch!

Wishing you a joyful & calm week,

Dr. Uma Naidoo, MD
