MOOD FOOD of the Week: Greek Yogurt
MOOD FOOD of the Week: Greek Yogurt
Mood: Depression
Food: Greek Yogurt
Research has shown that Greek yogurt can help calm the mind because…
It is an excellent source of live cultures which replenish the good bacteria in the gut for improved microbiome health which has been tied to reduced symptoms of depression
Greek Yogurt is high in vitamin B12, an important nutrient for nervous system regulation, and a deficiency of which has been linked to low mood
A great source of calcium, intake of which has been associated with higher positive mood scores
How to add this MOOD FOOD to your diet:
Unsweetened dairy or non-dairy plain greek yogurt is a versatile brain food that can be enjoyed at all times of day with both sweet and savory foods. One of my go-to breakfasts is homemade chia seed pudding topped with probiotic rich yogurt and a handful of blueberries. You may also enjoy a homemade parfait with my Mood Food Mixers (check out the recipe included in today’s premium subscription!) At lunchtime, swap mayonnaise for plain Greek yogurt for your own healthy chicken or tuna salad. For dinner, yogurt also makes a healthy base for creamy salad dressings and veggie dips or sauces. In the winter especially, I like to use a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt as a topping for veggie soups, stews and chili!
How to buy Greek yogurt:
Yogurt can be found in the refrigerated section of grocery stores. I recommend always buying the unsweetened plain version because the flavored varieties are loaded with sugars that can be detrimental to the microbiome. Plain Greek yogurt is a great option for those looking for a thicker, more protein-packed variety! You can buy it in single serve containers or large tubs that allow you to use as much or as little as you’d like. Traditional yogurt is made from fermented milk and is a dairy product, but for those who eat dairy-free, you can find non-dairy yogurts almost anywhere you can find traditional yogurt. These tend to be either nut, soy, or coconut based. I recommend reading the labels and choosing an option with as few ingredients as possible.
Wishing you a joyful & calm week,
Dr. Uma Naidoo, MD
