MOOD FOOD of the Week: Lemons

Mood: Brain Fog

Food: Lemons

Research has shown that lemons can help calm the mind because…

  • They are high in potassium which helps nurture the nervous system for healthier brain tissue and reduced brain fog.

  • Lemons are an excellent source of Vitamin C, a vitamin that also acts as an antioxidant to fight the damaging effects of oxidative stress for reduced inflammation and improved focus.

  • They also contain polyphenols, plant compounds that are repeatedly shown to support mental vitality.

How to add this MOOD FOOD to your diet:

Lemons are a classic ‘health’ food that deserve the hype! It is much more common for the juice of these fruits to be consumed than the fruit as a whole and it can be added to almost any food or beverage for a healthy flavor punch. Simply adding lemon to water, tea or a green smoothie is a great way to reap some of its benefits, while you can also use fresh squeezed lemon in a homemade salad dressing or squeezed over roasted veggies. Lemon slices also make a tasty addition when baked with clean proteins like salmon and chicken. Another way to enjoy lemon is zesting the rind over foods like veggies and seafood for a similar flavor punch!

Speaking of lemons, I received lemon balm in my CSA box this week and I am so excited to try different ways to use it! I am sharing more on lemon balm and how to use it in my Premium content below - check it out!

How to buy lemons:

Lemons can typically be found wherever you shop for your fruit! In most grocery stores you can buy them in the fruit section individually or in bulk and they are often also sold at farmers markets or produce stores. You may see bottled lemon juice also sold in stores, but when able I recommend fresh squeezing it yourself!

Wishing you a joyful & calm week,

Dr. Uma Naidoo, MD
